The holidays are coming soon and I’m offering a Holiday Workshop on Saturday, October 24, 2009, from 2-5 PM at my home.
 
THE DRAW: We will make holiday gift tags and cards using Stampin’ Up!’s Big Shot Die-Cut Machine—fast, easy, and oh, so, pretty!
 
THE DRAWING: For anyone who attends this workshop and places an order with me that day, your name will be entered into my Basket of Cards raffle. The holiday cards and tags will be handmade by me and there will be plenty of them! The basket, however, will be store-bought. The drawing will take place at the end of the workshop.
 
Can’t attend the workshop but still want to enter the drawing--NO PROBLEM!
Just place an order with me either by e-mail, phone, on my blog, or website and your name will automatically be entered into the Basket of Cards raffle on the day of the workshop. I will mail out the
basket to you if you aren’t local or I will personally deliver it to you if you are local.

OCCC--Monochromatic Mania Birthday Card

I've been wanting to use my Holiday Lounge DSP ever since I got it in my Pals Swap and today seemed like the perfect time to do so. Our Creative Corner's Challenge for this week is to make a monochromatic card using one color and one neutral. So I immediately reached for the "Taken with Teal Stripes and Diamonds" DSP and my card grew from there.

Here's what I did:

I made a base of Taken with Teal cardstock--4-1/4" x 5-1/2" folded on the side. Gina's Tip: When writing the dimensions of a card (much like a children's book!), the width of the card always goes first and then the length. So a portrait card is 4-1/4" x 5-1/2" (always folded on the side) and a landscape card would be written as 5-1/2" x 4-1/4" (always folded at the top).

I ran my base through my Big Shot Die-Cut Machine using my "Diamond" texture plate from Stampin' Up! Backgrounds 1 Texturz Plates to match the diamonds in the DSP. I cut a 4" x 3" piece of Whisper White cardstock and adhered it ot the bottom of my card. I layered a 3-3/4" x 2-3/4" piece of "Teal Stripes and Diamonds" DSP on top of the Whisper White.

I wanted something bold at the top of the card, so I placed a large Pretties flower with a half-pearl in the center above my DSP.

Using "Happy Birthday" from the Teeny Tiny Wishes Stamp Set, I inked my sentiment in Taken with Teal and stamped it on Whisper White cardstock. Then I punched it out with my Modern Label Punch and added it to my card.

I love the retro look of the DSP, but I'm glad I softened it a bit with the Pretties Flower. I think it works, but would love to know your thoughts on this card.

PPA #9--Leaf Lines Inspiration Card

 

It’s Thursday. Time for another Pals Paper Arts Challenge and I’m the Featured Artist today. So exciting! The PPA #9 Challenge is an Inspiration Challenge. The PPA Design Team supplies you with a photo and you can draw inspiration from the photo’s elements, colors, or overall theme.

 

Here’s the photo.

 

 

Here’s what I did.

 

●I started with a 4-1/4” x 5-1/2” base of Always Artichoke cardstock since I thought it matched the green in the photo so well.

 

●I adhered Very Vanilla and Soft Suede cardstock and the “Pinecone” paper from the Autumn Traditions Designer Series Paper (DSP) to my base. But before I did that, I used my Ticket Corner Punch on all four corners of the three layers.

 

●I love my Leaf Lines Stamp Set and wanted to match the draping down of the leaves in the photo so I chose the “Oak Leaves” stamp. I cut a 2” x 3” piece of Very Vanilla cardstock and randomly stamped my image in Chocolate Chip and Dusty Durango ink over the entire surface of the Very Vanilla. Again I used my Ticket Corner Punch to punch all four corners. Gina’s Tip: If you’d like to create different depths of color, don’t ink your stamp after each use. Overlap the images and run some of them off the edges of your paper.

 

●Next, I took the 3/8” twill tape and pressed it into Chocolate Chip ink and then when it was dry, I pressed it into the Dusty Durango ink to create the look of a branch.

 

●I stamped my “Oak Leaves” stamp in Chocolate Chip ink onto More Mustard and Dusty Durango cardstock and one more time, I inked up my stamp and using Dusty Durango ink, I stamped that onto the More Mustard cardstock. I then snipped out the three leaves with my paper snips and adhered them along my “branch.”

 

●Lastly, I stamped “Happy Thanksgiving” from the Teeny Tiny Wishes Stamp Set in Dusty Durango onto Very Vanilla, punched all four corners, and layered it onto Always Artichoke which I also punched with my Ticket Corner punch.

OCC--Yummy Color Challenge

I’m back…and it feels so good! After several days of celebrating Rosh Hashanah with my family, babysitting for my beautiful grandson, and catching up on my freelance assignments, I have finally found the time to enter a new and different challenge, at least one that is new for me. It’s from Our Creative Corner (OCC) and this week’s color challenge was just too yummy for me to pass up.

 

Here are the colors.

 

 

Here’s what I did:

 

I started with a 5-1/2” x 4-1/4” base of Chocolate Chip scored at the top.

 

I layered Pink Passion cardstock on top of the base.

 

Using the “Tall Flower” (forgive me for not knowing the name of this flower. If you do, please leave a comment below. I love learning the names of flowers!) from the “Of the Earth” Hostess Stamp Set, I inked my stamp in my VersaMark Pad and stamped it four times across Pixie Pink Textured Cardstock. I sprinkled on a good amount of Dazzling Diamonds Stampin’ Glitter and heat embossed the flowers. 

 

To add depth and texture, I then inked my stamp in Craft Whisper White ink, stamped it five times across my cardstock, sprinkled Dazzling Diamonds, and heat embossed these flowers. Gina’s Tip: When embossing, it’s better (but not essential) to use Stampin’ Up’s Craft ink rather than the Classic Ink. It stays wet a little longer and takes the heat embossing really well.

 

I stamped my “Happy Birthday” sentiment from the Teeny Tiny Wishes Stamp Set in Chocolate Chip ink onto Pink Passion cardstock and punched it out with my Modern Label punch. I backed that with Whisper White cardstock and centered it at the top of the card.

PPA #7--Big Shot KISS

 

Yaaayyy! My Big Shot arrived just in time for the Pals Paper Arts #8, Keep It Simple, Sweetie (KISS) Challenge. And, I have to say, I LOVE my Big Shot! It certainly does help to keep things simple for me!

Here’s what I did to KISS!

●I made my base out of Basic Black cardstock (5-1/2” x 4-1/4”) folded on the side.

●I used my Corner Rounder and punched both sides at the top of  the “Lettered Tulipe”  paper from the NEW Night & Day Designer Specialty Paper found in the Holiday Mini Catalog and adhered it to my base.

●Then I zipped my Manhattan Flower Embossing Folder with a sheet of Rose Red cardstock through my Big Shot. I tore the cardstock at the top. Gina’s Tip: To make tearing easier, run a line of water on a cotton swab across your paper where you’re going to tear it. This softens the threads of the paper and makes it much easier to tear.

●I corner punched both sides at the bottom of the Rose Red paper and adhered it to my card.

●I stamped my sentiment from the Leaf Lines Stamp Set onto Whisper White using Regal Rose ink, corner punched it, and popped a Stampin’ Dimensional behind it and onto my card.

Mojo Monday #104--Flock Together

   

Whew! I had so much trouble making my Mojo Monday card! No matter what I did, it was just not coming together for me. So I’m not sure I love what I made, but I’ve learned over the years from working with so many talented people in my field of creating children’s books that there comes a point where you have to let go and say ‘enough.’ Hopefully, I will have the opportunity to make lots more cards in my future.

Here’s the sketch:

 

Here’s what I did:

●I started with a 5-1/2” x 4-1/4” base of Certainly Celery folded at the top.

●I adhered the “Blue Branch Floral Pattern” paper from the Flock Together Designer Series Paper (DSP) and then I cut my strips of “Yellow Dotted” paper from the same DSP. So far, so good since I really like the Flock Together DSP.

●Using Certainly Celery cardstock, I stamped the “Big Flower” from the Petal Pizzazz Stamp Set onto my Versamark Pad, sprinkled on a generous helping of Clear Stampin’ Emboss Powder, and heated it up with my heat tool. I then did the same thing with the “Dotted Flower Stamp” from the Enjoy Every Moment Stamp Set, this time stamping onto So Saffron cardstock. Gina’s Note: Before I came up with this combination for the circles on the card, I had tried stamping the “Big Flower” in Certainly Celery ink onto Whisper White cardstock which came out too dull for this color scheme. I also tried two white floral rub-ons on So Saffron cardstock which also didn’t pop. Trial and error, trial and error. 

●Instead of using three small circles for the lower right-hand corner of the card, I used three words “Just for You” from the Teeny Tiny Wishes Stamp Set, stamped in White Craft Ink onto Tempting Turquoise cardstock and heat embossed. I cut my sentiment out in a rectangle shape but again I wasn’t crazy about the way that looked. So, I took my 1” circle punch and punched it out. I was so surprised when I realized that the saying looks as though it’s sitting in a short, round vase. Gina’s Note: I learned some lessons by making this card. Keep trying—surprises await you!

PPA #7--Tea Party Thanks

 

I can’t believe I’m a day late for the Pals Paper Arts Challenge! But better late than never, I always say. This week’s challenge is a sketch challenge by Pal Margaret Moody and I just love this design. If you like it, too, then please play in this week’s challenge. Here’s what I did:

 

●I made a base of 5-1/2” x 4-1/4” of Almost Amethyst, folded at the top. Gina’s Tip: This is a standard size greeting card.

 

●I adhered the “Almost Amethyst Big Flowers” print from the Tea Party Designer Series Paper (DSP) to the base.

 

●I chose the “Circles” print from the same DSP and adhered a ¾” strip of it across the top of my card.

 

●I used the “Three-in-one Stamp” from the Eastern Blooms Stamp Set and lined up three scraps of cardstock on my worktable in Certainly Celery, Pretty in Pink, and So Saffron. Gina’s Tip: The 2009-2010 Idea Book & Catalog lists all the colors used in each set of Designer Series Paper so you can easily match up your cardstock and inks to them. I inked the entire stamp with my Versamark Pad and stamped it across the three pieces of cardstock. To heat emboss the flowers, I sprinkled on Clear Stampin’ Emboss Powder, tapped off the excess, and heated them with my heat tool.

 

●Using my Circle Punch, I punched out each flower and adhered each across a

1-1/4” strip of Almost Amethyst using a Stampin’ Dimensional so the flowers would pop off the card.

 

●I stamped my “Thanks” sentiment from the Fundamental Phrases Stamp Set in Chocolate Chip onto a scrap of Almost Amethyst. Then I punched it out using my Modern Label Punch. I wanted a touch more color so I punched out a scrap of Certainly Celery and placed it behind my sentiment. I adhered both to my top strip.

 

I’m going to send this card to a good friend for a lovely gift she gave me for becoming a grandmother.

Happy Birthday, Tatiana and Caitlin!

This past Saturday I did a birthday party for two girls (who make up triplets with their brother). There were 15 girls all together at the party. Their mom and I decided to have the girls make journals using the 5" x 5" On Board Art Journals in the 2009-2010 Idea Book and Catalog. The girls decorated the outside and inside front and back covers as well as the spines of the book with paper, stamps, markers, stickers, watercolor pencils, and ribbons. Everyone worked for about 2 hours on their journals...and, of course, they got to take them home! The party was great fun and I learned so much by watching the girls create their books. Here are a few samples of what they made in various stages of completion. Hope you enjoy them!

Mojo Monday #103--Enjoy Every Moment Card

 

I was in a bright and cheery mood today (which isn’t really different for me from most days!) having spent the day yesterday with great friends at a Labor Day Bar-be-cue. So, my Pink Flamingo Designer Series Paper (DSP) jumped out at me for today’s Mojo Monday.

 

Here’s the sketch.

 

Here’s what I did:

 

●I created a 5-1/2” x 8-1/2” base of Real Red cardstock. I layered it with the “Big and Bright Flowers” from the Pink Flamingo DSP.

 

●Then following the sketch, I cut my rectangles from the “Tempting Turquoise Small Floral Pattern” and adhered each to Tempting Turquoise cardstock.

 

●I stamped “Enjoy” from the Enjoy Every Moment Stamp Set in Real Red on Whisper White cardstock and added a Red Fire Circle Rhinestone Brad in the middle of the “O”.

 

●I finished off the card by stamping “Every Moment” and two “Small Flowers” in Real Red onto Summer Sun cardstock and adhered that strip to my card. Lastly, I cut another strip of the “Tempting Turquoise Small Floral Pattern” and placed that on my card.

 

I love working with bright colors and this DSP has great colors and patterns.

Wheels Are A-Turnin' Masculine Birthday Card

 

My uncle’s birthday is coming up soon and I have difficulty making masculine cards. Anyone who knows me would be surprised by this since I have three sons, three nephews, and one grandson! (I do, however, have one wonderful daughter-in-law and one lovely niece!) So one would think I should be a pro at masculine cards, but I’m really not. However, the gears on the Storybook Specialty Designer Series Paper (DSP) inspired this card.

 

Here’s what I did:

 

I created a 5-1/2” x 4-1/4” base from More Mustard cardstock scored at the top. I layered it with the Old Olive “Gears” Storybook Specialty DSP.

 

I stamped “happy birthday” from the Teeny Tiny Wishes Stamp Set in Green Galore on Very Vanilla cardstock. Gina’s Tip: I debated as to whether to use Old Olive for the sentiment and the “g” but I decided I wanted to brighten up the card so I reached for Green Galore instead.

 

Using my Schoolbook Serif Alphabet (which I love!), I stamped out my uncle’s name in Chocolate Chip, Green Galore, and Crushed Curry on Very Vanilla.

 

Trying to echo the turning of the gears, I punched out my sentiment and each letter with my Oval Scallop Punch and adhered all the pieces to the card. Gina’s Tip: To further echo the gears, I made sure that the elements were a little askew—not evenly centered or placed on the card.

 

I think I’ve discovered that I enjoy making masculine cards since they’re a challenge to me…and I like challenges.
